A major new community asset has officially opened in Lidcombe, with the $6.1 million Yarra Community Centre now welcoming residents in the Carter Street precinct neighbouring Sydney Olympic Park.
Funded through the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program, the multipurpose hub has been designed to support the area’s growing population with flexible spaces for learning, study, collaboration and community events.
The centre introduces Australian first smart technology features, including an online ID verification system that allows users to register for a free City of Parramatta library membership and access services without attending in person. Members can utilise quiet study areas, click and collect library services, self-service printing and copying facilities, state of the art audiovisual systems and free Wi Fi.
Extended opening hours and enhanced security measures ensure the facility can be accessed safely into the evening, creating what Council describes as a community living room for residents in high density neighbourhoods.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the new facility responds directly to the needs of a rapidly growing community, providing spaces where people can study, host meetings, attend programs or simply connect close to home.
Yarra Community Centre is open seven days a week.
