Australians can look forward to a golden period of rugby with confirmation that the men’s and women’s tournaments in 2027 and 2029 respectively will be hosted here.
Australia will now host the British and Irish Lions in 2025, followed by the Commonwealth Games in 2026, back-to-back Rugby World Cups and then the summer Olympics in Brisbane in 2032.
It will be the first time Australia hosts the women’s tournament, having missed out to New Zealand for the 2021 edition.
After England host the 2025 women’s World Cup, Australia will host both the men’s and women’s World Cups, and then the USA will do likewise as an emerging market with the 2031 and 2035 World Cups.
Rugby Australia forecasts the dual World Cups will have a massive benefit to not only Australian rugby, but the Australian economy. Bid documents project over 217,000 international visitors and more than two million people attending the matches. The global audience for the tournaments will be four billion people, and the forecasted financial output, both direct and indirect, is $2.7 billion, according to Rugby Australia.
