Western Sydney’s newest cultural landmark is almost ready, with construction of Powerhouse Parramatta now 95 per cent complete ahead of its highly anticipated opening later this year.
Set to become the largest museum in NSW and the region’s first state cultural institution, the new facility will deliver more than 18,000 square metres of exhibition and public space along the Parramatta River. Designed as a major destination for learning, innovation and community connection, the project is expected to attract millions of visitors annually while strengthening Parramatta’s position as a global cultural and tourism hub.
A standout feature will be the expansive rooftop terrace, offering near-360-degree views across the city alongside a productive garden with Indigenous plantings, a greenhouse, and the Vitocco Kitchen, a 200-seat production kitchen designed for events and hands-on learning. The rooftop will also include an observatory with telescopes and a retractable roof, creating opportunities for astronomy programs connecting visitors with leading scientists.
Powerhouse Parramatta is also setting new sustainability benchmarks, operating on 100 per cent renewable electricity and targeting climate-positive performance. It will be the first public building in Australia assessed as a 6 Star Designed project under the Green Star Buildings rating system.
Once complete, the development will include almost 12,000 square metres of public domain, including a new riverside green square designed to connect seamlessly with the surrounding precinct.
The project represents a significant investment in Western Sydney’s future, supporting economic growth, job creation and new opportunities for businesses, residents and visitors across the region.
