An old rail line considered a ‘waste of space’ at Homebush Bay is to be given a new life. Called the Pippita Rail Trail, it will be revitalised to connect tens of thousands of residents to Sydney Olympic Park.
The original rail line serviced the state brickworks, state abattoirs and Homebush saleyards. Trains stopped at Flemington Goods Junction, Pippita, Metropolitan Meat Platforms, JCT saleyards, Salesyards, Thorpes, Abattoirs and Brickworks railway station.
Active Transport Minister Rob Stokes said, “The idea for this to become an active transport link came from the community. It was Andrew Moss, a local community member, who had a great idea in the public spaces competition. The idea came from the community…our vision is for it to be an active transport link…part of this grant funding is going to Cumberland Council to all the detailed design work as to what needs to be done to make this a permanent active transport link between Lidcombe station and Sydney Olympic Park.”
