The City of Parramatta has been recognised at the prestigious Boomtown! Awards, taking home Project of the Year for its innovative Shannons Paddock Playground.
Located between Westmead and Wentworthville, the $900,000 district playground was awarded in the Outstanding Community Infrastructure category, celebrating its unique design and strong community impact. The project has transformed a previously underutilised space into a vibrant local destination for families and visitors.
Drawing inspiration from the historic Shannons Brick Tile and Pottery factory, which operated in the area for over 70 years, the playground blends local heritage with contemporary play. A standout feature is the striking climbing structure designed to reflect the former warehouse façade, complete with rope climbs, elevated platforms and slides.
The design also incorporates recycled brick paving, terracotta tones and traditional brickwork patterns, paying homage to the site’s industrial past. Alongside its more adventurous elements, the playground includes quieter zones with swings and stepping features for younger children, as well as shaded spaces for families to relax beneath a canopy of mature turpentine trees.
The award highlights the City of Parramatta’s commitment to delivering creative, community-focused infrastructure that celebrates local history while enhancing liveability across the region.
