The NRL Grand Final was played at ANZ Stadium on Sunday, October 25, between Penrith Panthers and Melbourne Storm. In the end, Melbourne Storm withstood a late fightback by the young Penrith Panthers to win their fourth NRL premiership. Racing away to a 22-0 halftime lead, the Storm managed to score the first try of the second half, which ultimately proved to be the difference.
It is worth noting that some venues received a $5000 fine for a breach of COVID-19 regulations, with patrons congregating in greater proximity than permitted during the Grand Final.
This is a timely reminder that sporting events can build up anticipation and create lots of excitement but they also create exactly the types of situation we are trying to avoid – crowds that mingle and turn into one big group of close contacts.
