Local football players will now have even more opportunities to play and train in all weather conditions with the $17.5 million transformation of Newington Reserve officially opened on 9 September.
Newington Reserve is now home to a state-of-the-art synthetic sports field, new sports pavilion, outdoor fitness equipment, BBQ facilities, improved parking and landscaping, turning it into a modern recreation hub.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the project reflects the community’s vision for high-quality infrastructure that brings the community together and supports grassroots sports.
“Newington Reserve is our newest premier sport and recreation destination that local families in Newington, Silverwater and surrounds can enjoy for many years to come,” Cr Zaiter said.
“This investment in our growing community is a fantastic example of residents helping shape the future of their local neighbourhood, setting up the next generation of footballers for success.
“We’ve worked with the community to deliver a high-quality recreational space that is accessible, modern and supports local sports participation.”
Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said the transformation of Newington Reserve is a great example of what can be achieved when government invests in the facilities local communities need.
“This new facility will provide more opportunities for local players and sporting clubs to train and compete year-round, while giving families a quality space to be active and enjoy sport close to home, Minister Kamper said.
“Investing in grassroots sport is an investment in healthier, more connected communities, and the NSW Government is proud to support projects that deliver these benefits for years to come.”
Football NSW CEO John Tsatsimas said the opening of Newington Reserve demonstrates the importance of collaboration in delivering high-quality football facilities for the community.
“The opening of Newington Reserve is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when local government, government agencies and sporting organisations work together to invest in the future of community sport.
“Football continues to experience significant growth across NSW, and facilities such as Newington Reserve are vital in ensuring players of all ages and abilities have access to high-quality, safe and inclusive environments to play and develop.”
Community consultation on the proposed Newington Reserve Upgrade found nearly 70 percent of respondents supported the project with many highlighting the need for new sporting facilities, more recreation opportunities and a dedicated home for local football clubs.
Residents also showed support for outdoor fitness equipment with more than 63 percent backing its inclusion while around 61 percent supported the use of synthetic turf.
The Newington Reserve synthetic sports field represents a balanced approach between increased usability for sport outcomes and environmental responsibility.
The synthetic field includes an organic timber-based infill that replaces traditional rubber, providing a more sustainable alternative. The combination of dual fibres and wood infill creates a surface that feels and responds more like natural grass while providing optional traction.
The Newington Reserve Pavilion is an architecturally designed sports amenities building providing home and away sports change rooms with integrated showers and toilets, public toilet facilities and a field facing kiosk.
This project is proudly funded by City of Parramatta and NSW Government’s Office of Sport with a $20,000 contribution from Football NSW.
