The City of Parramatta has become the first council in Sydney to achieve gold status under the NSW Government’s sustainability recognition scheme.
The recognition, delivered by the NSW Department of Climate Change, highlights the City’s leadership in environmental practices and its commitment to creating a more sustainable future for the community.
Lord Mayor Martin Zaiter said the milestone reflects Council’s ongoing focus on sustainability across its operations and infrastructure. “We’re proud to set the gold standard in sustainability, not only within our community but in our day-to-day practices and services,” he said.
Home to around 300,000 residents, Parramatta has made significant progress in reducing its environmental footprint. The council achieved carbon-neutral certification in 2023 and is working towards a 75 per cent reduction in emissions by 2038.
Key initiatives include increasing the use of solar energy across libraries, community centres and carparks, as well as delivering sustainable infrastructure projects such as PHIVE. Located in Parramatta Square, the PHIVE building has achieved a 6-Star Green Star rating and is powered entirely by renewable energy.
The City of Parramatta is currently the only council in Sydney to hold gold status, joining City of Newcastle as one of just two councils in New South Wales to receive the recognition.
