Members and stakeholders have been advised previously that the Australian and NSW Governments are investing $200 million to upgrade the intersection of Homebush Bay Drive, Australia Avenue and Underwood Road to ease congestion, increase safety and improve travel times and connectivity to Sydney Olympic Park and Homebush for all road users.
At the February board meeting of the Sydney Olympic Park Business Association, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) provided an excellent presentation on various aspects of this project.
IN SUMMARY:
- This project will convert the current roundabout to a signalised intersection.
- Transport for NSW is responsible for developing, planning, and delivering the Homebush Bay Drive and Australia Avenue Intersection upgrade.
- Work will commence in 2027 with construction anticipated to take two years.
- The work will be undertaken as one contract covering both the Design and Construction phases.
- Much of the work will be conducted at night.
- Events being held at Sydney Olympic Park will be taken into consideration when the construction works are being programmed.
- This is a complex project akin to threading a fine eyed needle.
- The TfNSW project group acknowledges that Communication and Stakeholder Engagement will be critically important during all phases of the project.
KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION:
- It is acknowledged that with a project of this scale, there will be disruptions over the two years of construction. Regardless, this is a must deliver project that when complete, will significantly improve this important intersection.
- The Transport for NSW team responsible for delivering this project demonstrated great insights into the complexities of the project, including extensive modelling, and a clear understanding of the access and egress challenges in and around Sydney Olympic Park, acknowledging consideration of events when scheduling the program of works.
- This is a great opportunity to investigate increased public transport options (particularly buses), and to have these in place prior to the commencement of the construction.
- It is also a great opportunity to work with other government agencies and the City of Parramatta Council to look at and better facilitate alternative road access points for the precinct and educate the public on these options.
- This is a great opportunity to pursue a consistent approach across the major venues for integrated public transport ticketing, and increased direct trains and buses for events, to reduce the need for private vehicle use.
- The Business Association will work closely with this TfNSW project team to help communicate updates to our members and stakeholders.
Detailed information on this project can be found on the dedicated project website where you can also sign up to receive regular updates.
The Sydney Olympic Park Business Association will also continue to provide updates to our members and stakeholders as they become available.
