NBA D-League Star Signs with Sydney Kings

Excitement is building around the Sydney Kings’ 2016-17 roster, following the signing of NBA D-League star Greg Whittington.

The 23 year caught the Kings attention while leading the Sioux Falls Skyforce to a championship this past season.

He was also scouted at the NBA Summer league - while playing for the Miami Heat - by Managing Director Jeff Van Groningen, prior to his time with the Kings.

Greg stuffed the stat sheet for the Skyforce, averaging 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block per game, on his way to being named on the All-rookie team.

He also joined the Kings for a pre-season stint a few weeks ago, at which time the parties started talking seriously about the 2016-17 NBL season.

Van Groningen, who attended Whittington’s Kings workouts was very happy with what he saw.

“He impressed with his abilities on the court as well as his professionalism and demeanour off it.

Newly minted head coach Andrew Gaze is also excited by what Greg will bring to the club.

“I’m really happy that we managed to sign Greg. He’s a versatile player, and will help us in a number areas. I’m looking forward to him joining our program later this month.”

Standing 6’9, or 205cm, Whittington’s size and athleticism give the club great depth – he’s expected to spend time at the small and power forward spots.

Whittington has high expectations for the season ahead.

“I'm really excited to take the next step in my professional career. I can't think of a better place to do that than in Sydney with the Kings. And I want to bring more rings!"

He’s proven to be a prolific scorer and his above-the-rim exploits are sure to excite NBL fans this season.
